Lion's Mane Health Benefits

Lion's Mane Health Benefits

Lion’s Mane Research

Supports Nerve Regeneration

Lion’s Mane releases hericenones, which stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein essential for the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. Laboratory tests that measured the neurotrophic effects of compounds isolated from Hericium erinaceus on cultured brain cells, and found that the active compounds promote neuron projections, extending and connecting to other neurons. Scientists also found Lion’s Mane compounds increase the size of growth cones, which brain cells use to sense their environment and create new connections in the brain.

Research Support:

A 2023 study found increased growth cone size and neurons grew twice as fast when exposed to Lion’s Mane extract.

Can Boost Memory

In multiple studies, Lion’s Mane interventions resulted in increased test scores, better ability to complete tasks, and stronger memory. In one study, participants who ingested the lion’s mane extract demonstrated improved working memory, complex attention, and reaction time 2 hours post ingestion and perceptions of happiness over a 2-hour period.

Research Support:

A 2020 study found that Alzheimer’s patients improved test scores overall and particularly in relation to placebo group, which declined.

Reduces Anxiety and Depression

Lion’s Mane has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by promoting neurogenesis and regulating the gut-brain axis. Studies have also reported stronger sleep for those taking Lion’s Mane.
