Maitake Research
Supports Immune Function
Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is best known in research for its D-fraction, a highly bioactive beta-glucan compound extracted from the fruiting body (the part of the mushroom Yamabushi Farms uses) that has been extensively studied for its effects on immune cell activation. D-fraction works by engaging immune receptors, stimulating a coordinated immune response from the body's defense systems (like macrophages and killer T cells). Unlike some immune compounds that simply stimulate broadly, D-fraction has been shown to help regulate the balance between immune cell subtypes — supporting a more targeted, effective defense without overstimulating the system.
Research Support:
A 2014 study showed the natural immunomodulating glucans from Maitake were shown to strongly stimulate both the cellular and humoral branch of immune reactions.

A phase I/II clinical trial in 34 postmenopausal breast cancer patients found a statistically significant association between oral Maitake extract and measurable changes in immunological function, including shifts in T-cell and NK-T cell populations — demonstrating that the D-fraction produces immune effects in humans.

Supports Blood Sugar and Metabolic Balance
Maitake is one of the more researched functional mushrooms for metabolic health. Its bioactive fractions — particularly SX-fraction and D-fraction — have been studied for their ability to support healthy blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity. The mechanism appears to work primarily by enhancing the body's peripheral response to insulin, meaning cells become better at taking up and utilizing glucose. Maitake also contains trehalose, a naturally occurring disaccharide that inhibits alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme involved in glucose absorption in the small intestine.
Research Support:
A study in insulin-resistant mice found that a water-soluble maitake extract (Fraction X) significantly lowered (by 25%) circulating blood glucose and insulin concentrations, with researchers concluding the effect was primarily driven by enhanced peripheral insulin sensitivity rather than increased insulin production.

Research on maitake SX-fraction in diabetic rats found consistent and significant reductions in fasting blood glucose and systolic blood pressure.

Rich in Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory Compounds
Maitake contains a broad spectrum of antioxidant compounds including phenolic acids, flavonoids, ergothioneine, and glutathione. Research shows its glutathione content is higher than most fruits and vegetables. These compounds work together to neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory signaling pathways. Studies have shown that fatty acids in maitake inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzyme activity, the same enzymes targeted by common anti-inflammatory drugs, pointing to a meaningful natural anti-inflammatory mechanism rooted in the mushroom.
Research Support:
A comprehensive review of maitake's medicinal potential identified its polyphenol profile — including tannic acids, gallic acids, chlorogenic acid, kaempferol, and multiple flavonoids — as key contributors to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, and confirmed COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory effects from its fatty acid constituents.

A study analyzing antioxidant properties of multiple Grifola frondosa extracts found significant antioxidant activity against multiple oxidants and was identified as a good source of antioxidants.
